Has GLP-1 Changed the Way We Buy Perfume?

When people start GLP-1 medications, they expect their appetite to change. What they don’t expect is that their shopping habits might change too.

Over the past year, more and more people have shared the same observation: they buy less. Less food, of course — but also fewer clothes, fewer impulse purchases, and, surprisingly, fewer bottles of perfume.

Coincidence? Maybe. But there’s an interesting explanation behind it.

Perfume Is More Than a Scent

If you’re reading this, chances are you already know that buying perfume isn’t just about smelling good.

It’s the excitement of discovering a new release. Watching reviews. Comparing notes. Imagining how it will smell on your skin. Refreshing the tracking page while waiting for the package to arrive.

For many of us, the experience begins long before the first spray.

The Dopamine Factor

Scientists are now exploring how GLP-1 medications influence not only appetite but also the brain’s reward system. That doesn’t mean they “switch off” pleasure. It may simply mean that the constant urge to chase the next reward becomes quieter.

And for perfume lovers, that can feel surprisingly noticeable. The new release still looks beautiful. You still appreciate the bottle. You still admire the composition. But the overwhelming feeling of “I need this” isn’t quite as loud.

From Impulse to Intention

As a perfume collector, I find this fascinating. It makes you pause before buying another bottle and ask a simple question:

Do I truly want to wear this fragrance… or do I just want the excitement of buying it?

Those are two very different things.

A Better Collection?

Ironically, buying fewer perfumes doesn’t always mean loving perfume less. Sometimes it means loving your collection more.

Instead of constantly chasing the next launch, you spend more time wearing the bottles you already own. You revisit forgotten favorites. You build a collection with intention rather than impulse.

And perhaps that’s the most unexpected side effect of all. Not a smaller fragrance wardrobe. A more meaningful one.
